The town of Salamander Bay is named after the nearby shallow bay, which is named after the “Salamander,” a Third Fleet convict ship from which was the first European vessel to enter Port Stephens in 1791.

There are markers explaining the nautical history of the area along the Mariners Walk Heritage Trail, which runs the length of the Soldiers Point and Salamander Bay peninsulas. Take a stroll along Wanda Wanda Head’s trail, which begins at the end of Wanda Beach, to get a taste of the 3.3-kilometer-long trek.
