The town of Salamander Bay is named after the nearby shallow bay, which is named after the “Salamander,” a Third Fleet convict ship from which was the first European vessel to enter Port Stephens in 1791.

Wanda Beach is located towards the northern end of the town, this beach is a popular place to swim in Summer, especially in front of George Reserve where you can enjoy a dip in the bay, the children can enjoy the playground, and there are BBQs, and restrooms also provided at the reserve.
The short walk away leads to Wanda Head, which may be found by strolling south along the beach. There are markers explaining the nautical history of the area along the Mariners Walk Heritage Trail, which runs the length of the Soldiers Point and Salamander Bay peninsulas. Take a stroll along Wanda Wanda Head’s trail, which begins at the end of Wanda Beach, to get a taste of the 3.3-kilometer-long trek.
